How much life insurance do you need?

A calculator plus the reasoning: income duration, debt amounts, education needs, and what you have saved.

The typical approach is summing your financial obligations and subtracting existing savings or benefits. The math isn't precise, nor does it need to be: term policies are purchased in standard increments, and the objective is a reasonable amount that would keep your household stable during the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Calculation = annual income × years of coverage + outstanding debts + education costs − current savings or insurance, rounded up to the nearest $5,000. This is an estimate to start with, not professional guidance.

Why those inputs

Income duration. The typical recommendation spans between ten and twenty years of earnings; the exact timeframe reflects how many years your dependents will rely on your income. Families with younger kids in this region frequently opt for longer protection periods since the combined weight of housing, daycare, and schooling bills runs highest during these years.

Debts. The largest debt for most families is a mortgage. Having insurance proceeds that can clear this debt allows your family to stay in the home if they choose, free from financial pressure.

Education. Allocate an estimated amount per child in current dollars. It's simpler to include this now rather than securing a second policy later.

What you have. Personal savings you could draw on, and employer-provided coverage. Group plans generally terminate at job separation, so many individuals count only a fraction.

Once you settle on a target amount, visit the quote tool to see what 10 to 30-year terms cost with each available carrier. It's common to purchase more than your initial estimate because the monthly cost difference is small at younger ages.
